Manchester Ship Canal. One of many locos used for shunting & trip working on the once extensive MSC railway system.

 

L&YR 790 (BR 52393)

Class 3F 0-6-0, designed by Aspinall.

General purpose freight loco, but also used on secondary passenger services.

LBSCR 662 (BR 32662), Class A1X ("Terrier") 0-6-0T.

30587.ex LSWR, Beattie 2-4-0WT.

("Well tank", water stored in tank between / under the frames.)

Both types saw use on London suburban services when new, but enjoyed long lives, due to being retained for use on lines where larger locos were unsuitable.

Claimed to have been the first loco. to exceed 100 mph, although this is now regarded as slightly dubious.

Quite good locos. but prematurely withdrawn following Beeching closures & onset of dieselisation some years earlier than had been anticipated.
